The Prince of Wales is the current heir to the throne

Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice are "waiting in the wings" for Prince William to make his decision about their royal futures, according to a commentator.

Prince William is thought to be considering expanding the working Royal Family to include his cousins Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, despite his preference for a streamlined monarchy.

The Prince of Wales, who has long favoured a reduced number of working royals similar to his father King Charles's vision, may need to reconsider this approach when he ascends to the throne.

Royal commentators suggest the 42-year-old prince is beginning to recognise the practical challenges of maintaining royal duties with limited family members.

Particularly following Prince Harry's departure from working royal life to reside in California with his family.

Royal author Ingrid Stewart has claimed that the York sisters are "waiting in the wings" to assume greater responsibilities within the monarchy.

Speaking to New Day Magazine, Stewart stated: "They're valuable assets and I'm certain they'll get involved with royal duties when William becomes King.

"I'm sure they would like to do more, and they're waiting in the wings to be asked."

The princesses have maintained their royal connections through charity work and appearances at Palace events, positioning themselves as potential future working royals despite not currently holding official roles within the Firm.

Royal commentator Richard Eden previously observed that William is "starting to see the value" of his cousins and their potential long-term contributions to the monarchy.

Eden told the Mail: "From what I'm hearing, Prince William is starting to see the value of his cousins and what, in the long term, they could give."

He noted that the late Queen Elizabeth II relied on support from her cousins throughout her reign, including the Duke of Kent and the Duke of Gloucester.

"They're doing more and more. They're private duties really, in terms of charity work, but I think Prince William and his father are noticing this and appreciating it," Eden added.

Eden has highlighted the inherent contradiction in William's vision for the monarchy, questioning the sustainability of a drastically reduced royal family.

He remarked: "Prince William, like his father, has always favoured a slimmed-down monarchy as the future and what that now looks like is just William, Catherine, and their children. But, how on earth could they justify all the wealth and palaces for that one nuclear family?"

The royal commentator suggested that "future announcements" regarding the York sisters' roles could be forthcoming, describing it as "an exciting time for them."
